Thanks to the Japan Association of Language Teachers (JALT) for letting me share the article I wrote for the May/June 2019 issue of The Language Teacher (TLT) about an Action Research project involving teaching grammar to children, entitled How Should Grammar Be Taught to Children?

Article summary: The research showed that grammar teaching methods that work with adults (consciousness-raising) do not work well with children under the age of ten. Students over the age of ten found this project, where we focused on correcting the ten most common errors, very useful but students younger than that found it frustrating and unhelpful. While focusing on form and the patterns of language (without explicitly teaching rules or using metalanguage) can be an efficient way to get younger students to learn correct grammar, teachers can not realistically expect younger learners to master these rules.
